If I only had $100…I would buy at LCBO Vintages

I’m not sure about the rest of you but I find my $100 does not go nearly as far as what it used to. Wine inflation, or is it that my opportunity to taste many products is getting the better of me?

LCBO Magazine Oct 17The LCBO Vintages release of October 17 focuses on Barolo (Italy) and Napa (California) full-bodied wines at full-bodied prices. The reasons are varied from the outstanding property value where the grapes are harvested, to the methodology spent by the winemakers in producing such rich full-bodied wines.

Having just returned from Ireland, I was a little squeezed for cash for this month, but I am very pleased in offering three 3 great whites, a port and a red ruby with my last $100.00. and just a little change. Perhaps still on holiday mode, I overspent but not by much.

THE SCOOP: I had forgot how delicious this Port can taste, talk about desert! It is like a liquified Christmas cake with a little chocolate on top. How is that for a tasting note? Aromas of caramel, toasted nuts and raisin pie, some ripe blackberry, creamy and luscious on the palate with loads of volume. The long, smooth, slightly peppery finish trickles warmly down the throat sending you back for one more sip, oh my it’s good. I hate to use an old cliché, but with some stinky strong cheese it is a match made in heaven.

THE SCOOP: For those of my friends who love a big full-bodied Chard., this one is for you.

The melange of tropical fruit is over the top, reminiscent of my baked pear and peach crisp with some toasted almonds. It’s creamy and buttery with concentrated caramel and vanilla on the lengthy finish. Not for the faint of heart, this Napa-style classic white wine has loads of finesse. It could easily stand up to a bbq’d steak or with some grilled swordfish or salmon.

THE SCOOP: A sensational Viognier and only 150 cases, so put it on your list. Delivers layers of soft tropical fruits, ripe yellow apple and peaches, wild honey, and a touch of spice. Ever so slightly off- dry but with a perfect seam of citrus acidity to round it out. Beautifully balanced, medium weight, smooth as silk and one taste keeps you coming back for more. Serve it slightly chilled and don’t spoil it with food – there’s just too much goodness in this bottle.

THE SCOOP: Bright pale yellow bursting with a field of white flower aromas mingled with lychee and lemon-lime zest. Clean and fresh on the palate, lots of citrusy fruit flavours, a lovely zip of acidity with a tantalizing zippy finish. It would be fabulous with chicken Alfredo, lemon linguine, fish and chips or a lovely sipper on its own. One great price-point for a value packed wine.

 

3 Rings Shiraz 20133 Rings Shiraz 2013

Barossa Valley, Australia
$18.95 (Vintages #15495) 15.2% alcohol

THE SCOOP: Huge dark fruit fruit; blackberries and blueberries, a little cassis and some green pepper at the end. One solid Shiraz with fine tannins underlying all the berry flavours ending in a peppery dried fruit finish. This beauty has length and depth. With some lamb burgers or chops it would be lip-smacking.There’s a lot of wine here for that price point.

Heritage Canada recently put out a pamphlet called “This is why I love Winter”, but they failed to mention the new wines in Vintages. For folks like myself this was a miss since indoor activities can offer up wonderful new tantalizing adventures. The LCBO Vintages release for February 7 offers all kinds of new kids on the block: “South of the Equator”, “Italy’s Native Grapes” and of course, “Valentine’s”.  Talk about something for everyone.

LCBO Vintages Magazine Feb 7Aside from the 37th Winterlude festivities, February can sometimes be dull, so why not sparkle it up with an afternoon brunch or lunch, featuring some new releases. Start with a sparkling or a new white wine and a red. A grouping of cheese, another for meats: interesting cold cuts, salamis’s with a few baguette thins and great mustard, tiny quiches, maybe a little soup (hot or cold) in a shooter, some one bite cupcakes or cocoa brownies to finish. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to make it fun and very satisfying. Introduce a little Port when the cappuccino machine goes on and folks will be talking about this for ages. Different and edgy.

Now this is why I love winter!

Poulet et Fils Cremant de DiePoulet et Fils Brut Crémant De Die

AC, Rhône, France
$17.95 (Vintages # 392555) 11.5% alcohol

The aromas are like putting your face into a bouquet of roses. Pale golden in colour, those tiny bubbles are just bursting with ripe strawberry and raspberry flavours that continue to effervesce with lemon-lime juiciness. It is a beautiful sparkling wine, perfect for a brunch or to share with a special someone during February. Would be divine with strong cheeses or just on its own.

 

 

Eradus Sauvignong BlancEradus Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Awatere Valley, Marlborough, New Zealand
$18.95 (Vintages #225557) 13.5% alcohol

While not new to Vintages, this 2013 release offers everything in a great Sauvignon Blanc. Pale in colour with lively green apple flavours that give your mouth a vivacious squirt of acidity. Very fresh with lots of lemon-lime on the palate this white wine is also soft and creamy, with a tangy and clean finish. Not overpowering but there’s lots of backbone and it will stand up to spinach spanakopitas.

 

 

Rolf BinderRolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz/Mataro/Grenache 2010

Barossa Valley, Australia
$24.95 (Vintages #995092) 14.5% alcohol

You can’t go wrong with a 65% Shiraz, 25% Mataro and 10% Grenache blend. Aromas of ripe plums and sweet spice carry through to the palate in this bold rich wine. Smooth as silk on the tongue with soft tannins and a fruity finish almost reminiscent of  Christmas cake. Layered and complex, lots going on with every sip and you could easily cellar this beauty for a few years. This red wine would be fabulous with a Cottage pie and don’t skimp on the garlic mash topping.

 

Lamadrid BonardaLamadrid Single Vineyard Bonarda 2011

Mendoza, Argentina
$14.95 (Vintages #232652) 14% alcohol 

Dark and inky in colour, smokey aromas waft from the glass. After just one sip of this red wine, sweet, very ripe dark berries coat the palate that seem to last forever. Blackberries and sweet spice permeate the long fruit finish. Tannins are soft but complex, the wine has good body and would stand up handsomely with anything grilled or some hot salami and olives. It’s also a  great sipper on its own with a page turner book and a fireplace.

 

Warre's Warrior Finest PortWarres Warrior Finest Reserve Port

Douro, Portugal
$16.95  (Vintages# 197202) 20% alcohol

DOP means Protected Denomination of Origin which means it has identifiable characteristics from a certain area in Portugal. With an unbelievable price point it did not disappoint. “Warrior” is the oldest brand of Port in the world, having been shipped continuously since the 1750’s.

A nose of buttered toast, hazelnuts and coffee, it is so big and smooth and deliciously sweet on the palate it reminded me of raisin pecan pie. Silky red fruits partner with the above on the tongue making this one delicious drink. I also got a little lemon and licorice the finish, the flavours did not stop coming and I was pretty impressed for that price. With some strong smelly cheese and a bowl of warm mixed nuts, that would be a powerful afternoon or after dinner delight. (Would also make a great hostess gift).

The November 8 LCBO Vintages Release features Star Quality products and ports.  Just like a squirrel scurrying to store nuts for the winter, I’m collecting a few bottles from each release to keep for the winter months. My husband reminds me that the wine stores stay open in the winter, but it’s good to have a little stash for unexpected company. Unfortunately with star quality products come star quality quality prices, however I am so pleased and proud with my $100. shopping basket, that I hope you will be too.

LCBO Vintages Magazine Nov 8There is something compelling about Port, whether its because it hails from a timeless land where grapes have grown for centuries or that it is such a great match for strong deliciously stinky cheese. I could cheerfully enjoy a glass of port on just about any occasion. It also makes a lovely hostess gift instead of the usual bottle of wine and chances are a bottle of Port will last a lot longer. There are at least 6 in this release so I hope one finds its way into your shopping basket.

There’s something for everyone and don’t forget Beaujolais Nouveau arrives on our shelves November 20.

Dow's Late Bottled Vintage PortDow’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2009

DOC Douro, Portugal
$17.95  (Vintages #613927)    20% alcohol

First of all, its hard to argue with a Silver Medal winner at the 2014 International Wine Challenge. Deep ruby in the glass, this port is deliciously sweet with ripe berry aromas and tastes. It has just the right amount of acidity that helps promote the dark berry flavours – it is mouthwatering delicious. I think this would also make a lovely afternoon drink on ice with some toasted walnuts and cheddar, or with mincemeat tarts or do I dare say Christmas cake? It’s also an amazing price point.

 

Megalomaniac BubbleheadMegalomaniac Bubblehead 2011

VQA Niagara Peninsula
$28.95  (Vintages #363655)  12% alcohol

When the cradle was released (that’s the little crossed wire on the cork) it just burst with fine bubbles overflowing. I thought this sparkling wine was about as close to Champagne as it comes. The mousse (little tiny bubbles that tickle the nose) went on forever bursting with delicious cranberries and cherry flavours with just a little citrus on the finish.  It is a sheer “bubblehead” delight and not a bit of wonder it was awarded Overall Best in Show and Best in Show White at the 2014 Royal Wine Competition.  Well deserved, I shall serve it chilled on its own.

 

 

Menade VerdejoMenade Verdejo 2013

DO Rueda, Spain
$16.95 (Vintages #392159)  13% alcohol

This white wine is new to Vintages, made from 80-100 year old Verdejo grape vines. It’s very pale in colour, almost watery, but oh so fresh and it would be dynamite with seafood.  It’s quite aromatic and flavourful. Some folks may think it more of a summer wine being light-medium bodied but it has so much soft tropical fruit flavour that I wanted to feature it as a change from our usual grape varietals. After the release (when I can pick up a bottle or 3)  I’m planning to serve it with spaghetti and clams and an uncomplicated side salad,. Guess whose coming to dinner?

 

 

Casas del Bosque Reserva CarmeneraCasa del Bosque Reserva Carmenère 2012

Rapel Valley, Chile
$14.95 (Vintages #205872)  14.5% alcohol

Carmenere is Chile’s signature premium grape varietal. This wine displays characteristics of a great Carmenere being full bodied with depths of blackberry and spice flavours.

There is a hint of something vegetal or like a green leaf on the finish. It’s a hearty wine, not for sissies. I’m planning to enjoy it with a sausage and bean stew with some crusty bread. You just cannot beat that price point.

 

 

Layer Cake PrimitivoLayer Cake Primitivo 2011

IGT, Puglia Italy
$19.95 (Vintages #384065)  13% alcohol

I longed to have a big bowl glass and not just a sip. Inky in colour with tastes of jammy black cherries and plums,this red wine is rich and smooth. The wine was fermented in stainless steel to preserve the fruit flavours. The bottle label suggests that the wine should taste like a layered cake, with chocolate and mocha and spice and a little earth at the end. I couldn’t say it better. It’s layered with complexity and the fruit flavours go on forever. Primitivo is also known as Zinfandel in North America so if you are a fan of the latter, this beauty will not disappoint.

This wine also received the first-ever Certificate of Label Approval with Primitive and Zinfandel used as synonyms on the label. My signature winter dinner party dish is Osso Bucco;  a labour of love for my friends, so that’s where I’m going with this wine. I can’t wait for that December dinner party to wow them.

Mark your calendar

Beaujolais Nouveau is released every year on the third Thursday of November. It should be consumed before Christmas if you want to enjoy the wine’s full vibrancy and flavour.

Wine 101: Storing wine

To fridge or not to fridge?

There are many different type of wine fridges on the market.  The decision that you need to make is mainly about how many you want to store in the fridge.  There are some that are divided into racks for white wine & red wines with different temperatures for the sections of the fridge. You can find basic ones at Canadian Tire & Costco or go fancy with units from Chefs Paradise (on Bank Street) or Wine Cellars Solutions

Which wines to cellar?

Take a cue from the bottle.  Wines in darker glass bottles are intended to keep longer—the coloured glass refracts the light to protect the contents.

Not all ports are the same

Vintage port is the only one that should be aged and a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time.  Frankly, they should be opened once your grandkids are in their 20s. Vintage port is clearly labelled as Vintage port & should simply be stored in a cool dark place – no need for a fridge. All other ports should be consumed & will not improve with age or a fridge.  If you have some Ruby or Tawny ports that are already 15 to 20 years old, their quality is questionable & may have already plateaued.  Best to open to see what they taste like & simply enjoy.

Drink your scotch now

Scotch whisky does not improve with age.  It is already aged & ready to be enjoyed when you are ready to open.

Portgual & New Zealand show off their vibrantly stylish wines

We’re well into Spring with the April 13 LCBO Vintages release, which features wines from New Zealand and Portugal. New Zealand’s southern hemisphere water-bound land mass offers a mid-latitude maritime environment particularly suited to the production of unique, quality wines. Not only is there diversity in the varieties cultivated—from the well-known Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, to Syrah and Viognier—but there is great regional diversity—from the established regions of Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, to the emerging Waitaki Valley.

New Zealand – commitment to sustainable winemaking

The New Zealand wine industry has made a firm commitment to innovative and sustainable viticultural and winemaking practices which they expect will reinforce their reputation for “vibrantly stylish wines”. In 2007, the New Zealand wine industry committed to having 100% of the country’s wine produced under approved independently audited sustainability standards by 2012. The industry shares practices in areas such as water usage, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity.This Vintages release highlights New Zealand’s best-known wine regions, Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, showcasing classic Sauvignon Blanc, aromatic Pinot Gris, and clean unoaked Chardonnay, as well as elegant Pinot Noir and fruity, well-balanced Merlot.

 Portugal – tradition integrated with state-of-the art viticulture

Portugal is best known for its famous Port wine, but the country also produces tangy, fresh white wines and concentrated flavourful red wines from a broad range of native grape varieties. The country has a long history of winemaking, dating back several millennia. Since joining the European Union the 1980s, Portugal has experienced substantial change and an increasing focus on quality in the wine industry. Now Portugal is integrating traditional with modern methods to produce wines of great character, yet modern in style. While most wine was previously produced by cooperatives, and much still is, many grape growers are now establishing their own wineries (quintas) and creating wines with their own unique style. This LCBO release provides the opportunity to try a classic Alvarinho Vino Verde, as well as several red wines, many of them including Touriga Nacional, such as Monte Vilar Reserva. Touriga Nacional is one of Portugal’s best-known red grapes, used in the production of red varietal wines, red wine blends and Port. There’s great value in these wines, with the majority priced under $20.

The general release offers some tasty Niagara wines such as: Fielding Estate Cabernet Franc and Reif ‘The Magician’ Shiraz/Pinot Noir, Viewpointe Estate Auxerrois and Featherstone Rosé, the latter two included in our selection. If you want to share a taste of a rich savoury Chilean red wine, try the Perez Cruz  Cabernet Sauvignon in the 375ml format. Other full-flavoured red wines include Easton Zinfandel, Oyster Bay Merlot and Quinta de Ventozelo ‘Reserva’ Douro Tinto. There’s also great value in the fruit-forward Montepulciano and Sangiovese blend, deAngelis Rosso Piceno Superiore ($14.95) and the Rhône red blend, Le Cirque Grenache/Carignan/Mourvèdre/Syrah ($15.95). With all the great values on offer, we’re managed to include 6 wines for just under $100!
