2015 Cabernet Merlot Reserve

$22.95
Niagara-on-the-Lake

Aged 10 months in French oak, this blend is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 40% Merlot.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: There’s so much going on here! Black plums, red cherries, mint, cedar, tobacco – the flavours are big and complex. The tannins are big, too, and chewy, with matching high acidity. The wine finishes long with the plum flavour lingering on the palate.

Suggested Food Pairing: This is the wine to bring to Sunday dinner, equal to your roast beef and trimmings.

Cellaring: Cellar 3-5 years for optimum enjoyment.

Pondview Estate Winery: Lot 74 Sparkling Brut

2014 Lot 74 Sparkling Brut

$24.95
Niagara-on-the-Lake

Pondview’s Director of Sales, Marcel Morgenstern, wouldn’t tell us anything about this wine until we had tasted it. Finding unusually floral, Marcel laughed and told the story. He said he had discovered a box of wines made in the 70s in a winery that had shut down. Among them, he discovered a Vidal table wine, and began to think about how unusual it is that so few wines are made with this lovely hybrid grape. He thought it would be an interesting experiment to make a sparkler with it and convinced his Pondview colleagues. The Lot 74 Sparkling Brut – made from 100% Vidal grapes in the Charmat method – is the result.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: The wine pours with heady effervescence and aromas of white peaches and cherry blossoms. It’s lightly tart and very pretty, with a surprisingly sharp mousse. This would be a beautiful wine to celebrate the beginning of the weekend or a get-together with friends.

Suggested Food Pairing: Marcel recommended pairing this wine with a party! But he also said it would go well with canapés served at that party.

Cellaring: Drink now.

Nyarai Cellars: Viognier

2015 Viognier

$22.95
Annan, ON

“Nyarai” comes from a Southern African “Shona” word meaning humility. But there’s nothing humble in these exquisite wines created by winemaker Steve Byfield. He said he made this Niagara-on-the-Lake Viognier because there isn’t a lot of that grape produced in the region.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: This is a wonderful expression of Viognier, matching the classic flavours perfectly: tropical fruit – and especially pineapple – minerals, and a steely undertone with medium acidity. It’s flavourful and satisfying.

Suggested Food Pairing: Steve says to pair this with classic roast chicken, and we think that will work well.

Cellaring: Drink now.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Lenko family planted these vines on the Beamsville Bench in 1959, making them some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in North America.

2017 Laundry Vineyard Riesling

$22.75
Niagara-on-the-Lake

Ontario makes some of the best Riesling in the world. It grows well in our wine regions and is delicious with chicken or seafood.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: Southbrook’s slightly off-dry 2017 Riesling balances its crisp tartness with a satisfying drop sweetness. This sweet-sour framework surrounds the big tropical fruit and green apple flavours.

Suggested Food Pairing: Southbrook pairs with light seafood, such as ceviche!

This estate-grown wine was aged for 6 months in French oak.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: It’s very complex, with dark cherries and mint notes dominating, but vanilla and black pepper in the background. Well balanced medium tannins and medium acidity lead to a long dark cherry finish.
