I was recently looking back on my If I only had a $100, I would buy… blogs and noticed what I originally said (years ago), that you need not go further than our own backyard to discover new and great wines. Little did I realize my words would come back to haunt me. This release would be a perfect time to demonstrate I am still “drinking my words” and they are not hard to digest.

LCBO Vintages April 26This LCBO Vintages released today (April 26) also focuses on some lovely Champagnes, sparkling wines and Bordeaux’s. Although French Champagne is a little beyond my budget of $100, their are new Bordeaux that are spectacular AND do not break the bank.

Finally, there is a Canadian surprise in this release and for those of you who would like to splurge or need a gift suggestion of something completely different, the “7 Years Old Canadian Whisky and Pure Maple Syrup from Quebec Liqueur” (Vintages #317206, at $49.95) is a delicious new conversation piece.

Always proud to be Canadian,

If I only had $100, I would buy these wines at LCBO Vintages…

Tawse Spark RieslingTawse Spark Riesling 2012

Limestone Ridge Estate Vineyard, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula
$19.95 (Vintages # 370361) 11.5 % alcohol

All those delectable, well-dressed bubbles and no where to go? There are as many bubbles in this wine as in the most delectable of Champagnes. You could take this new little sparkler anywhere and like all Tawse wines, this Spark is a class act. Elegant, lots of spritz with flavours of green apples, lime and citrus along with some minerality, this is a beautifully balanced and light weight sparkling wine. This would take you from a mid-afternoon party to an elegant cocktail party.

Grey Monk ChardonnayGray Monk Unwooded Chardonnay 2012

BC Okanagan Valley
$19.95 (Vintages #303743) 13.5 % alcohol

The “unwooded” in the wine title caught my eye as I am so used to reading “unoaked”. This white wine is like a bowl of ripe peaches and pears – that makes me think of summer. I can’t think of a better reason to buy a wine especially when the temperature is still so chilly. Bone dry and smooth, medium weight and just the right amount of buttery flavour, well- structured and plain delicious, if delicious can be plain? Don’t wait for summertime food…just enjoy now.

Chateau le Bourdillot Séduction 2009

AC Graves EARL P. Haverlan
$18.95 (Vintages #365908) 13.5 % alcohol

This is a first for me, featuring a wine that is also the ‘Wine of the Month’ at Vintages, but after tasting this, I could well understand why the LCBO would want to promote this medium bodied blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Gentle blackberries, subtle floral, pinch spice, a little woodsy with great full flavour from start to a medium finish. A real food red wine and would be a great with a pot roast or is it too passé to serve beef bourguignon beyond winter months? Never!

Sisters Run Epiphany ShirazSister’s Run Epiphany Shiraz

McLaren Vale, South Australia
$15.95 (Vintages #269464) 14% alcohol

A deep garnet coloured Shiraz, full bodied with finely integrated tannins and acidity, loaded with black fruit and blueberries, a little pepperminty on the finish. Fruit forward tastes and of course with the usual butterflied lamb roast or lamb chop partners… if it’s too soon for the bbq, throw the spuds in the oven with everything else, have a sip while making the salad (don’t forget some feta) and you’ll be on your way to a feast.

Pepin CondePepin Condé Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

WO Coastal Region, South Africa
$15.95 (Vintages #365981) 14% alcohol

Another FABULOUS price point and a new kid on the block. I found this to be a wonderful expression of what the Cabernet Sauvignon grape can deliver. Dark ripe fruits, a little spice, some pencil shavings, nicely structured, soft texture and again, for this price point, you will not disappoint any guests with burgers or steak.

Grand Total: $ 90.75  – look what I have saved you !
