It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas!

You tell me…is it too early to start your festive shopping?  The 23 November LCBO Vintages release features “Our Finest, Holiday Gifting and Premium Spirits” which just put me in the mood to start picking up a few gifts for Christmas.  Since most people I buy for imbibe, it makes my holiday shopping almost one-stop.

While there is no one on my list that will be receiving the Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21 Years Old Highland Single Malt at $241.95, it would sure make a great splurge for a lover of single malts.  I also did not realize that Spain produces a wine called Alion 2009, DO Ribera del Douro with a dear price tag of $84.95.

Although, I may splurge in a bottle of Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2010 (Vintages # 243592, $35.95). I remember featuring this wine at a Savvy Event a couple of years ago and folks literally swarmed my booth for a sample of this nectar or after having tasted it, and then returned for more. In this release, there is also another incredible Aussie red wine from Barossa, called The Holy Trinity by Grant Burge (Vintages# 236257, $29.95). With one sip, my taste buds really did think they had died and gone to heaven!

There are many lovely wines in this release. Just remember when you are shopping for others, it does not hurt to pick up something wonderful for yourself as well.  You deserve it!

Cheers!

Julie

If I had $100 I would buy at LCBO Vintages…

Tinhorn Gewurztraminer 2012

VQA Okanagan Valley, British Columbia
$24.95 (Vintages #904185)   12.9% alcohol

I was first introduced to Tinhorn wines when Susan – another Savvy Sommelier – asked me to split a case of some Tinhorn Creek red wines with her. I jumped at the opportunity knowing her expertise for wines in the Okanagan Valley.  And the red wine certainly did not disappoint. I was excited to see this Gewurztraminer white wine and hope more BC wines will make their way to Ontario. Lovely aromas of white blossoms and lychee, some tropical fruit flavours on the palate, a little mango and lime and just cries for a spicy shrimp curry with jasmine rice. That sounds like a dinner party.

Featherstone Black Sheep Riesling 2012

VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
$16.95 (Vintages # 80234)  10% alcohol

Crisp, fresh and delightful are the descriptors that come to mind when tasting this delicious Riesling. Mind you, I don’t think there are any Featherstone wines I don’t like. This white wine has lots of flint and wet stone  – typical of Niagara area Rieslings  – combined with yellow and green apple flavours, not typical in many Rieslings. It is a delicious afternoon sipper or a great appertif as it could accompany almost any hors’d’oeuvres…stock up for the holidays!

Salentein Reserve Malbec 2011

Mendoza, Argentina
$17.95 (Vintages #640854) 14.5 % alcohol

There’s nothing like those dark inky Malbecs in the heart of winter. In this red wine are aromas of blueberries and spice, lots of black currants on the palate and a little cassis. It has loads of flavour and a tight structure, nice firm tannins but juicy and a peppery, ripe berry aftertaste. I liked it just on its own or can imagine that it would pair nicely with any grilled meat; even with chocolate or a piece of Christmas cake.  Practically takes you through two courses.  Argentina be proud with this outstanding red wine!

Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir 2011

Casablanca Valley, Chile
$14.95  (Vintages #354340)  14% alcohol

While some folks look at me in horror when I say that it has taken me awhile to cuddle up to Pinot Noir’s, lately, I have discovered some good ones. This light cherry coloured, medium bodied red wine is is quite lovely and smooth. It has smooth mouth coating red fruit flavours with a touch of smoke, a little forest floor pepper and earthiness in the after taste. At 14.95, it is an incredible price point.  Serve with mushroom lasagne…and please put my name on the dinner invitation!

Château D’Anglés Grand Vin 2008

AC Languedoc La Clape, France
$20.95 (Vintages #286492)  14.5% alcohol

How can you go wrong with a blend of 55% Mourvèdre, 35% Syrah and 10% Grenache Noir. These classic grape varietals are used extensively in the Rhone Valley in southern France to make big bold red wines. Rich and heady with leather and smoke aromas this is a red wine combined with dense dark fruit on the palate. Baked fruit pie, stewed plums and Christmas cake spices that linger long after the last swallow. This is one of our all-time favorite blends with a beef stew or lamb shanks.

Portgual & New Zealand show off their vibrantly stylish wines

Posted by Susan

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

We’re well into Spring with the April 13 LCBO Vintages release, which features wines from New Zealand and Portugal. New Zealand’s southern hemisphere water-bound land mass offers a mid-latitude maritime environment particularly suited to the production of unique, quality wines. Not only is there diversity in the varieties cultivated—from the well-known Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, to Syrah and Viognier—but there is great regional diversity—from the established regions of Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, to the emerging Waitaki Valley.

New Zealand – commitment to sustainable winemaking

The New Zealand wine industry has made a firm commitment to innovative and sustainable viticultural and winemaking practices which they expect will reinforce their reputation for “vibrantly stylish wines”. In 2007, the New Zealand wine industry committed to having 100% of the country’s wine produced under approved independently audited sustainability standards by 2012. The industry shares practices in areas such as water usage, energy consumption, waste management and biodiversity. This Vintages release highlights New Zealand’s best-known wine regions, Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, showcasing classic Sauvignon Blanc, aromatic Pinot Gris, and clean unoaked Chardonnay, as well as elegant Pinot Noir and fruity, well-balanced Merlot.

Portugal – tradition integrated with state-of-the art viticulture

Portugal is best known for its famous Port wine, but the country also produces tangy, fresh white wines and concentrated flavourful red wines from a broad range of native grape varieties. The country has a long history of winemaking, dating back several millennia. Since joining the European Union the 1980s, Portugal has experienced substantial change and an increasing focus on quality in the wine industry. Now Portugal is integrating traditional with modern methods to produce wines of great character, yet modern in style. While most wine was previously produced by cooperatives, and much still is, many grape growers are now establishing their own wineries (quintas) and creating wines with their own unique style. This LCBO release provides the opportunity to try a classic Alvarinho Vino Verde, as well as several red wines, many of them including Touriga Nacional, such as Monte Vilar Reserva. Touriga Nacional is one of Portugal’s best-known red grapes, used in the production of red varietal wines, red wine blends and Port. There’s great value in these wines, with the majority priced under $20.

The general release offers some tasty Niagara wines such as: Fielding Estate Cabernet Franc and Reif ‘The Magician’ Shiraz/Pinot Noir, Viewpointe Estate Auxerrois and Featherstone Rosé, the latter two included in our selection. If you want to share a taste of a rich savoury Chilean red wine, try the Perez Cruz  Cabernet Sauvignon in the 375ml format. Other full-flavoured red wines include Easton Zinfandel, Oyster Bay Merlot and Quinta de Ventozelo ‘Reserva’ Douro Tinto. There’s also great value in the fruit-forward Montepulciano and Sangiovese blend, deAngelis Rosso Piceno Superiore ($14.95) and the Rhône red blend, Le Cirque Grenache/Carignan/Mourvèdre/Syrah ($15.95). With all the great values on offer, we’re managed to include 6 wines for just under $100!

Cheers and Enjoy!

Susan

Kim Crawford ‘East Coast’ Unoaked Chardonnay 2012

Marlborough/Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
$18.95 (Vintages #991950) 13.0% alcohol

Straw hued and delightfully expressive with aromas of white flowers, citrus and ripe stone fruit, this is a clean, fresh white wine. Dry, with a racy backbone of keen acidity, it offers flavours of melon, green apple and tangy citrus, as well as a pithy note that persists on the lengthy, mouth-watering finish. Enjoy with your choice of seafood or lemon roast chicken.

 Monte Vilar Reserva 2011

Alentejo, Portugal
$14.95 (Vintages #276105) 14.0% alcohol

An excellent value, this ruby/violet blend of native red grape varieties display remarkable complexity of aromas—vanilla, ripe fresh field berries, dried cherries, mineral and earth. Dry, medium-full bodied, the concentrated dark berry fruit is garnished with a touch of pepper and espresso and framed by fresh acidity and perceptible tannins. The finish is dry, full flavoured and long lasting. Pick up a few bottles and try them over the next several years.

Viewpointe Estate Auxerrois 2011

VQA Lake Erie North Shore, Ontario
$14.95 (Vintages #327239) 12.5% alcohol

From a dramatic boutique estate winery on the shore of Lake Erie comes this lovely pale gold wine, tantalizing the nose with delicate aromas of stone and tropical fruit, pear and flowers. Just off-dry, the flavours are quite intense—pineapple, ripe yellow plum, apricot and juicy nectarine. It’s a very tasty wine with a fine balancing seam of acidity and a delicious fruity finish. A good choice to sip on its own or to savour with lightly spiced dishes, previous vintages have sold out quickly from the winery. Don’t miss the boat!

Featherstone Rosé 2012

VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
$14.95 (Vintages #117861) 12.0% alcohol
Produced from Gamay and Merlot, the deep rosy salmon color of this tasty rosé wine portends the intensity of aromas and flavours. Bursting with ripe red field berries and cherries, apple skin and mineral notes, it also exhibits hints of spice and pepper. Dry, mid weight, all that juicy flavour is balanced with lively acidity right through the lasting flavourful finish. A versatile, value-driven wine that will delight on its own or paired on a warm spring day with a balsamic beef and strawberry salad.

Alfredo Roca‘Reserva de Familia’ Pinot Noir 2010

Mendoza, Argentina
$19.95 (Vintages #301275) 13.0% alcohol
Aged 9 months in oak, displaying a garnet hue, this gem of a wine offers attractive aromas of cherry/berry garnished with notes of vanilla, spice and toast. Dry, silky in texture, it has a lovely core of ripe fruit—raspberry, cherry and blackberry—mingling with notes of spiced oak and earth. Approachable, with fruit deftly balanced by fresh acidity and fine tannins, it delivers a lengthy, dry yet smooth finish.

Château la Croix de Queynac 2009

AOC Bordeaux Supérieur
$15.95 (Vintages #138636) 13.0% alcohol

Deep ruby, this award-winning red wine offers depth of flavour and very nice value. The aromas are very ripe berry fruits, spice and cedar, with a sweet note of dried fruits. Dry, medium-full bodied, ripe tannins and a fine measure of acidity balance plush berry fruit, sweet spice and a trace of toasty vanilla that carries through the long-lasting dry finish. Enjoy this attractive blend now or over the next couple of years.

le beaujolais nouveau est arrivé

Posted by Julie

Beaujolais Nouveau is a ritual in the wine world which always takes place on the third Thursday of every November. The production of Beaujolais Nouveau is a race from grape to glass, bottled just a few weeks after the grapes have been hand picked. Beaujolais grapes are picked ONLY by hand before being fermented.

As it is a young wine, it tastes better chilled. It is known for its cherry and green leaf flavours and high acidity but I find it clean and fresh. I had to laugh when I read that it is better “quaffed” like juice rather than sipped. While I do not think of Beaujolais Nouveau as a red wine with “fine bones”, throughout France and in many other parts of the world this is a time for celebration.

Georges Duboeuf, one of the largest and best known wine merchants in France, is famous for his Beaujolais. His bottles are inexpensive and have beautifully coloured labels that on any table could start a Beaujolais party. Have each of your guests bring an appetizer and let the celebration begin. I also think Beaujolais Nouveau is a great match for turkey but the French no doubt pair it with hearty Burgundian foods. The French say it must be consumed before New Year’s Eve but I know mine won’t last that long.

Try it and see what all the hype is about!

Ewald Gruber Hundspoint Gruner Veltliner 2011

Weinviertel, Neiderosterreich, Austria
$17.95 (Vintages #298299)   13.2% alcohol

The Gruner Veltliner grape is Austria’s liquid gold and takes a dominant position in the total vineyard surface area. I find it fresh and crisp, aromas of stone fruit, great acidity but not too lively, a light to medium bodied white wine it delivers tastes of green apple, lemon lime and a little green pepper on the palate but I think that is the minerality from the soil. It has a reputation for being a perfect match to those hard to match foods such as artichokes or asparagus. if you are looking for a change from your Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling, this will not disappoint.

Featherstone Rosé 2011

VQA Niagara Peninsula
$14.95 (Vintages #117861) 12% alcohol

I visited Featherstone winery a couple of years ago and was so taken with sheep roaming around chewing on grape leaves to help expose the grapes to the sun and come to fruition. I love Rosé and this one is no exception. A beautiful cranberry colour, ripe red berry aromas that follow through on the palate: raspberry and strawberry flavour and  just slightly off dry. Always food friendly and just a great sipper on its own.

Villa Ponciago La Réserve Fleurie 2011

AC, France
$21.95 (Vintages #299917)  13% alcohol

Perhaps unlike the Nouveau Beaujolais, this Beaujolais Cru Gamay is to be savoured and enjoyed.

Fleurie is one of the most renowned of the 10 Beaujolais Crus, it’s vineyard has 30 year old vines. A pale purple colour in the glass with dark fruit aromas of blackberries and blueberries. It has that tangey acidity that only a well made Beajolais can offer with ripe berry fruit flavours, and lots of them on the palate. There is enough in the body that it could be put away for a couple of years but I would be inclined to bring it out when you have some friends over for a pre-Christmas get together. It’s an elegant example of Beaujolais at its best.

Ruffino Serelle Vin Santo Del Chianti 2008

DOC, Italy
$24.95 (Vintages #1008)  15.5% alcohol

Vin Santo is also known as holy wine in Tuscany since it is used in communion. It is also known as a “straw wine” since traditionally it is made from grapes left out on straw mats to dry and shrivel up. This concentrates the flavours of the grapes which similarily to our ice-wine in Canada can be labour intensive and price indicative. This Vin Santo, released just in time for Christmas is rich amber in colour, has ripe aromas of oranges, almonds and caramel with some stone fruit like apricots on the palate, a pinch of honey on the finish. It is just perfect for dessert with some biscotti for dipping. This is a drier (than some) Vin Santo and would also be nice with some old cheddar.

Howling Moon Old Vine Zinfandel 2009

Lodi, California, U.S.A.
$18.95 (Vintages #57356)  13.5% alcohol

A deep dark purple with luscious aromas of vibrant berries and on the palate is sheer richness of black berries, a little coffee and chocolate, all giving an almost creamy mouthfeel and a big blast of flavour like only a Zin can provide. This is a big wine and I also detected aromas of coffee, chocolate even a little caramel and finishes with a little heat and black pepper. With a portobello and sirloin stew this would be magic.

Grand Total: $ 98.75

For Wine Lovers in Ontario, our own backyard is well stocked..

Posted by Julie

Cherry and peach trees, grapevines – miles of them, wineries galore dotted with the odd golf course, farmhouses, B and B’s are the memories of the past week in the Niagara Escarpment. When Holly suggested I write a guest blog on Doug’s and my recent travel, I immediately responded positively although it’s hard not to write a journal, so much to see and taste!

For wine lovers, the Niagara Escarpment, Twenty Valley, Niagara-On-the-Lake locales are an oenophile paradise. While the wineries offer the usual vitis vinifera varietals: Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir etc., many have ice-wine and their own rose.  Between sipping and sampling en route, as dedicated sommeliers and wine nuts, we visited over 20 wineries, as well as attending the Cool Climate Chardonnay event held at the Tawse Winery (July 23) where 56 wineries featured their “Chards.”  For the ABC folks (anything but Chardonnay), Chardonnay still remains the most widely produced VQA in Ontario.

Every winery we visited left something memorable; whether it was the enormous stainless steel tank named Budda, at Creekside Estate Winery, or the labels on the Organized Crime Wines, telling a pictoral story of Mennonites feuding over an organ (catch the play on the word?)  Or the new Colaneri winery, 37,000 square feet, the largest winery in the region still under construction, shaped like a Roman coliseum in a hugely impressive “C” representing the Italian family and their winemaking heritage.

The viticulture was amazing at Featherstone Winery where we witnessed sheep chomping away at the grape leaves so the grapes will be exposed to sunshine which in turn, speeds up their ripening. These little sheep meander up and down the rows of vines, and it was quite humorous watching them chew the leaves. Needless to say I took pictures.

The most valuable members of the team.

Many of the wines at these boutique wineries are unavailable at the LCBO so we brought a few home. One purchase was a Featherstone rose and have since found it to be a great patio to table “spirit”.  An enchanting cranberry colour, all the ripe berry flavours, bone dry with tart acidity that practically jumps out of the glass. We have since enjoyed this with grilled shrimps, zucchini and our always tomato basil salad which makes a divine summer supper.

Sheep: appreciated for their usefulness & whimsy.

We have previously traveled the Twenty Valley and the sense of anticipation with old and new wineries never ceases to amaze and never disappoints. The people are friendly, knowledgeable and their eagerness to share the harvest makes for a magnetic welcome. We’re already talking about the wineries that we plan to visit next year. I’ve always said, you never have to look further than your own backyard in Ontario to find great wine.

Cheers, Julie
