6 wines for under $100!

In Niagara Falls, every August, the judging for the Intervin Wine Competition takes place. These wine awards are designed to recognize the very best of international wines available to Canadian consumers.

Although the 2017 results will not be released until November it is fitting that LCBO Vintages is showcasing Ontario wines and Flagship In-Store-Discoveries (FISD) in this release.  Most of these “Flagships” are too pricey for my budget, but I had no difficulty finding some other gems at incredible price points.

My go to wine is always Ontario. This province has the VERY best of everything: from farm to table food, to sports and entertainment; our wine selection is unbeatable and incomparable. Harvest time will soon be here and I hope you’ll be inspired to pick up a few bottles you’ve not tried before. I can almost guarantee you may find a new favourite.

Here’s to Ontario wine shopping, a place to stand, a place to grow, Ontario-ario- ario !

Creekside Marianne Hill Riesling 2015

Stunning and expressive, well deserved for the Gold Medal winner at the 2017 National Wine Awards of Canada.

I can’t wait to see what other accolades may be in store for Creekside and this gem. Beautifully balanced with flavours of green and yellow apples, peaches and flinty wet stone which shows in many Niagara escarpment Rieslings.

Light-weight with gentle fruit flavours, a perfect afternoon wine to sip or to try with crab cakes, sushi or lighter lunch fare. Mellow and delicious.

 

Featherstone Four Feathers 2016

VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment, Ontario
$14.95 (Vintages #341586) 12.5% alcohol

I have written previously on different Featherstone Estate Winery wines and this one is so lovely I could not neglect it in this release.

The blend of  Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc brings out the very best in each of these varietals. Slightly off-dry, delicate and aromatic, well structured and layered with flavours of apples and stone tree fruits that decorate the palate in one lovely wash. It has a lingering fruity finish.

Perfect for salads, grilled shrimp or fish tacos; an easy sipper and a wine that has something for everyone.

I cannot imagine anyone who could not like this wine.

 

 

Firebird Legend Pinot Grigio 2016

PGI Vulcansti, Moldova
$12.95 (Vintages #74351) 12% alcohol

The very odd time I feature a wine that I was not able to taste and this is one of those. Moldova is a country sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania in the Black Sea basin where the vines grow.

Historically, there are over 112 thousand hectres of vineyards and over 30 types of varietals so I assume these folks must have achieved some finesse somewhere along the lineage.  One website boasted tropical fruit flavours with zippy acidity, so for that price point, for me, it is worth a try.

 

Tawse Sketches of Niagara Rosé 2016

VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
$17.35 (Vintages #172643) 12%  alcohol

Not just any Rosé, this blend of Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Gamay makes a lively entry with it’s handsome cranberry colour and aromas of ripe cherries and a pinch of white pepper. On the palate are impressive strawberry and watermelon flavours.  It’s driven by lively acidity and some rhubarb on the elegant finish.

Bone dry which makes it a perfect accompaniment to grilled chicken, salmon or just on its own with some soft cheeses.

Always a class act.

 

13th Street Red Palette 2016

VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario
$15.95 (Vintages #244558) 13 % alcohol

13th Street Winery has to one of the prettiest wineries along the Niagara Escarpment I think. Not only is there a spacious tasting room with floor to ceilings windows, but upon entry, the long spectacular table gives it an art gallery feel. The bakery farmhouse next door also makes it a worthwhile stop for lunch or to grab an outstanding butter-tart.

This Red Palette blend is so juicy; bursting with red cherry and ripe raspberry flavours with just a hint of green savoury spice on the finish. Medium bodied, the varietals of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc make it a perfect accompaniment to turkey, ham or salmon (I am already thinking about Thanksgiving!). Well rounded and perfectly balanced with soft tannins and a hint of smokey acidity on a decent cherry finish. You could partner this alongside just about anything from fish to pork/veggie kebabos or mild Thai take-out. Simply delicious.

 

Traipiche Fina Las Palmas Gran Reeserva Malbec 2014

Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
$16.95 (Vintages # 186668) 14.5 % alcohol

Malbec is Argentina’s signature grape and no one grows it better than Traipiche. At altitudes higher than the CN tower, Trapiche was one of the first Argentinian wineries to enter the international scene. In 1889, the winery received its first international award in Paris.

Dark and inky in colour, rich and expansive on the nose your senses are fillled with luscious black and ripe red fruits that flow through on the palate. Everything Traipiche produces is worth picking up and their wines are a great price point. This Malbec is full-bodied and not for the faint-hearted, structured with layers of blueberry and ripe plum favours, some spice and tobacco on the finish. It’ll be forever in memory with braised short ribs and spicey sausages.

I can’t wait to pick this up and head to the butcher.

FreshTAP moving into Ontario with wine-on-tap

Every glass of wine should taste exactly as the winemaker intended. Wine Industry Leaders Allan and Brian Schmidt in partnership with Cameron West expand wine-on-tap category.

FreshTAP is growing fast. With its newest expansion into Toronto and the Ontario market, British Columbia-based FreshTAP Pouring Systems promises wine lovers across the province a carefully curated range of Smarter, Fresher, Friendlier local VQA wines on tap, by the glass to an ever more discerning community of restaurateurs and wine lovers.

From its 5,000 square foot facility in the Niagara Peninsula, FreshTAP Ontario kegs wines from Creekside Estate Winery, Henry of Pelham Estate Winery, Mike Weir Winery, Stoney Ridge, Reif Estate Winery, and Vineland Estates into 19.5L stainless steel kegs—the equivalent of 26 bottles or 130 five-ounce glasses.

Held under the gentle pressure of an inert gas, each wine is perfectly preserved from oxidation for up to eight months once tapped, ensuring that the last glass is as fresh as the first. FreshTAP is currently featured in Toronto at popular restaurants such as Rock Lobster, Drake 150, Montage and Walhburgers, and ONE Restaurant by Mark McEwan. FreshTAP has also installed seven, five-tap systems and a portable wine-on-tap unit at the new 5,300 seat Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

Latest trend in wine

“Wine-on-tap is the hottest trend in restaurant wine service across North America right now,” says FreshTAP Ontario’s  Cameron West, who, alongside Vineland Estates Winery’s Allan and Brian Schmidt, has brought FreshTAP to Ontario. The sons of a third-generation winemaking family whose father founded B.C.’s Sumac Ridge Winery, the Schmidts have been pioneers and industry leaders in the Niagara wine region for over three decades.

“We knew of the high-quality standards developed and practiced by FreshTAP in B.C. for premium wine kegging and restaurant wine-on-tap installations,” says Allan Schmidt. “That made it easy for us to partner with them to expand the brand and to make that same premium service available to all of Ontario’s wineries.”

From the point-of-sale perspective, FreshTAP ensures the utmost quality in wine-on-tap by-the-glass, with less spoilage and waste, greater efficiency for restaurants, and a more positive environmental impact.

Waste not…want not

Based on current clients and licensees, FreshTAP Ontario estimates it will keg over 100,000 liters of wine in its first year (2014-2015), thereby eliminating more than 15,000 lbs of cardboard waste and diverting some 130,000 bottles, caps and corks from Ontario’s recycling and waste streams. Since launching in British Columbia in 2011, FreshTAP has kegged over 320,000 liters of wine, eliminated 52,201lbs of cardboard waste and kept 429,052 bottles, caps and corks from entering that province.

“It’s been an exciting three years since we launched in B.C., and we couldn’t be happier partnering with such esteemed industry professionals in Ontario to elevate FreshTAP to the national level,” said FreshTAP Co-Founder Mike Macquisten. One of Ontario’s Virtual Wineries – 2027 Cellars

Kevin Panagapka – the man behind 2027 Cellars has been a viticulturalist and winemaker ‘in the making’ for most of his life. His father, Don, has been making wines, winning wine competitions, and judging wines for decades.  Surrounded by wine during his childhood, it was only natural for Kevin to be at his Dad’s side helping out

Then came time for his formal training.  Kevin completed the Viticulture and Oenology program at Niagara College in 2002, then jumpstarted his winemaking career at Niagara’s Creekside Estate Winery and Flat Rock Cellars. In 2006, already dreaming of creating his own wines, Kevin travelled to New Zealand to participate in a harvest and helping out at Esk Valley Winery in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

Research and his international experience led Kevin to establish 2027 Cellars – a virtual winery. What is a virtual winery you ask?  Essentially, it is a winery within a winery.  By sharing space & equipment at Featherstone Estate Winery where he is the assistant winemaker, Kevin has made a business arrangement with Featherstone’s owners – David Johnson & Louise Engel – to make wines at their facility under a different brand and name.  This enables Kevin to realize his dream of his own winery with low capital costs and also allows for Kevin to cultivate and harvest grapes from select mature vineyards owned by other wineries or grape growers in distinct Niagara sub-appellations. This approach underlies Kevin’s philosophy of winemaking – to meticulously manage the vineyards so that his small batch of handcrafted wines express the unique varietal character and distinct terroir of each vineyard. You will see what we mean when you have a sip of the outstanding wines in this month’s Savvy Selections. For starters, you will notice that the labels identify the vineyard name where Kevin sourced the grapes for the specific wine.

What does 2027 mean?

Kevin intentionally focuses on the three renowned international grape varieties that he feels are ideally suited to the Niagara climate – Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Together with his wife, Jodie, they purchased a small property on the Beamsville Bench, where they grow Pinot Noir.  The winery name? The answer lies with the purchase of the land. When the vineyard was registered with the Grape Growers of Ontario, it was assigned number 2027!

2027 Cellars

Presented by Sommelier Susan Desjardins 

As mentioned earlier, Kevin’s father – Don – is a well known amateur winemaker. Don is a member of the Kitchener Waterloo Winemakers Guild and was recognized with a lifetime achievement award from the Amateur Winemakers of Ontario. Kevin (in photo left) has great memories of working with his dad in the basement, or should I say ‘cellar’, in the family home. “My Dad never had enough hands when it came to bottling. It seems I’ve been around wine for most of my life!”, recalls Kevin. Early on in life, Kevin developed an interest in Burgundy, France and the wines from this famous region. “As winemakers, we tend to fall into one category – blends or not. Personally, I prefer to focus on single variety wines (winespeak: wines made with only one grape variety), explains Kevin.”

Wine that speaks from its roots

Kevin has a clear passion for wine that speaks to its roots.” I have always believed that great wines are grown, not made and that quality fruit produces quality wines. My interest is in varieties that showcase terroir and I enjoy investigating the differences between the various vineyards from which I source my fruit.” he comments. “It also ties into the ‘wild fermentation’ and ‘unfiltered’ wine style of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It’s what makes winemaking and viticulture interesting for me, keeps me engaged in the process from start to finish.”

Precise & specific

Kevin is very precise in the criteria he looks for in the vineyards and vines he sources. “I look for quality vineyards that are at least 10 years old. I buy specific rows and manage the cropping levels, leaf removal and general care of all the vineyard blocks. This allows me to control the quality of the wines from the beginning of the season in the vineyard, through harvest and the winemaking process.” Kevin sources only Weiss 21-B clone Riesling from the Niagara Escarpment Bench sites, which produces a lovely aromatic quality in the wine. His Chardonnay is sourced from Lincoln Lakeshore and Twenty Mile Bench sub appellations, while the Pinot Noir comes from the Twenty Mile Bench and St. David’s Bench. Why does Kevin focus on these three varieties? “They seem best suited to our climate, as these are the varieties that can be counted on to ripen fully every year in Niagara.”

Both the Riesling and the Chardonnay are from the Foxcroft Vineyard, which is located on the lower portion of the Twenty Mile Bench sub appellation, offering slightly warmer summer temperatures. As Kevin indicated, “the fruit from this site tends to ripen earlier than the higher elevation sites, producing a perfect balance between ripe fruit and vibrant acidity.” The soils in this area include deep clay and till and display quite a variation in texture. Although they are well drained, their water-holding capacity is especially valuable in the warmer periods of the growing season when rainfall is limited. The Queenston Road vineyard is located in the sub appellation of St. David’s Bench in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region and is where the 9-year-old vineyard of Kevin’s Pinot Noir grows. This parcel of land benefits from gentle north-facing slopes, sheltered by the Escarpment. Good airflow ensures the vines benefit from the early onset of spring, while the deep, rich clay soils ensure the vines are well-anchored in the ground.

As a virtual winery, 2027 Cellars does not have its own winery or wine shop. Kevin recalls, “In 2007, I proposed the idea to Featherstone Estate Winery husband and wife owners, David Johnson and Louise Engle. Luckily, they were receptive to the idea, and they have been supportive ever since! I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to make wine at their facility.”

Kevin appreciates David & Louise’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, yet is also realistic about the challenges of growing quality fruit in Niagara. “There is alot of disease pressure here due to the humidity, so it’s very tough for wineries to establish viable organic or biodynamic grape-growing and winemaking processes. My focus is on quality fruit from producers who have the same high standards as I do.”

While naturally passionate about what he does, Kevin is modest about the success of his wines. His 2009 Foxcroft Vineyard Riesling took top honours at Ontario’s Cuvée Awards. When asked about this success, what does he say? “The awards have been good recognition for the brand. But I would really like people to judge the wines for themselves. If they enjoy the wine, I’ve done my job!”

2027 Foxcroft Vineyard Riesling 2011 VQA, $25.00

Produced from the fruit of 15-year-old vines, this Riesling was fermented in stainless steel and bottled early to preserve its aromatic intensity & crispness.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: Brilliant straw/green in colour, this fragrant wine offers complex aromas—jasmine, orchard & stone fruit, citrus, mineral and a touch of mango. Dry, silky, flavours of key lime and orchard fruit marry with a kick of lively acidity, creating a clean, tangy finish.

Suggested Food Pairing: A versatile wine, sip it or pair with seafood or simply prepared chicken or pork.

Cellaring:  Enjoy it now or cellar 3-5 years!

 

2027 Foxcroft Vineyard Chardonnay VQA 2011 $30.00

Produced from hand-harvested grapes, this Chardonnay was barrel fermented with wild yeast strains. As only 78 cases of the wine were produced, we’re fortunate to include this newly released wine for you & all of our Savvy Selections subscribers!

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: We were the first to sample this wine! It was bottled only a few days prior to the Savvy Selections panel tasting.  Nevertheless, this wine showed its full potential.

Subtle aromas of toasted nut, butter and pear mingled with tropical notes suggesting pineapple and banana flambée. Elegant, mid-full weight, it’s creamy on the palate offering flavours of caramel apple, pear crisp, and toasted nut. Well balanced and lush, it gently warms the palate with delicate notes of white pepper that linger through the finish.

Suggested Food Pairing:  Enjoy with creamy pasta dishes, baked ham or roast chicken.

Cellaring:  The wine will have experienced bottle shock, so we advise to let the wine rest for a month or so before serving or cellar 3-5 years.

 

2027 Queenston Road Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 VQA $35.00

 Fermented using only naturally occurring wild yeasts, this alluring Burgundian-style wine was aged in seasoned French oak for 14 months, and is neither fined nor filtered.

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes:  Garnet hued, dry and silky, the wine has a plethora of aromas—cherry/berry, earth, vanilla, a touch of red licorice and notes of toasted marshmallow. Medium bodied, the bright red berry flavours wrap around a backbone of fine acidity and fine-grained tannins, overtones of pepper and spice flowing through the long dry finish.

Suggested Food Pairing:  Serve with roasted duck, planked salmon or braised chicken.

Cellaring:  Drinks well now, it will also cellar 5-7 years.

With 2027 Foxcroft Vineyard Riesling VQA 2011…

Shrimp Bisque

From Cooking with BC Wine, Townsin, T & C.
Serves 4

Ingredients

¾ white wine
2 Tbsp butter
1 small carrot, chopped
½ onion, chopped
1 bay leaf
½ tsp dried thyme
15 large raw shrimp, unpeeled
½ C flour
4 C chicken or fish stock
2 Tbsp cream

 

Method

Melt butter in a heavy pan over medium heat. Sauté carrot & onion with bay leaf & thyme until vegetables are soft. Add white wine and shrimp & poach for 8-10 minutes. Remove shrimp from pan & set aside.

Peel 8 shrimp, reserving shells. Dice the meat & set aside for garnish. Put the shells & the remaining unshelled shrimp in a food processor & blend into paste.

Slowly stir the shrimp paste into the poaching liquid then add the flour & mix well. Add the stock & return to boil, then simmer for 15 minutes. Strain soup through a sieve & then cheesecloth before adding cream & reheating.

Serve into individual bowls & then add diced shrimp meat to garnish.

With 2027 Foxcroft Vineyard Chardonnay VQA 2011…

Linguine with Pears & Gorgonzola

From Epicurious.com (from Bon Apetit Magazine)
Serves 4

Ingredients

¼ cup butter
4 firm pears (about 2 lbs.), peeled, cored, sliced into 1/3 inch-thick strips
1 scant Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 cup canned low-salt chicken broth
4 oz. Gorgonzola cheese, crumbled (or to taste)
¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
½ cup whipping cream
¾ lb. linguine, freshly cooked
1/3 cup chopped pecans, toasted


Method

Melt butter in a heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add pears & sauté until tender & beginning to brown but not soft, about 8 minutes. Using slotted spoon, carefully transfer pears to bowl.

Add rosemary to same skillet & stir until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add broth, Gorgonzola cheese, ½ C parmesan cheese & cream. Simmer until sauce thickens enough to coat spoon, whisking occasionally, about 6 minutes. Return pears & any accumulated juices to sauce. (Can be made 2 hrs ahead. Let stand at room temperature. Bring to simmer before continuing.

Add linguine & pecans to sauce. Toss over medium-low heat until sauce coats pasta, about 3 minutes. Season to taste with salt & pepper. Transfer to large bowl. Sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese.

With 2027 Queenston Road Vineyard Pinot Noir VQA 2010…

Chicken Marbella

From epicurious.com (from The Silver Palate Cookbook)
Serves 10-12

Ingredients

4 chickens, 2 ½ lbs each, quartered (or skinless chicken thighs)
1 head of garlic, peeled & finely pureed
¼ cup dried oregano (or to taste)
Coarsely ground salt & pepper to taste
2 ½ cups red wine vinegar
½ cup olive oil
1 cup pitted prunes
½ cup pitted Spanish green olives
½ cup capers with a bit of juice
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup white wine
¼ cup Italian parsley (or fresh coriander), finely chopped


Method

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a large bowl combine chicken quarters (or thighs), garlic, oregano, pepper & salt to taste, vinegar, olive oil, prunes, capers & juice, and bay leaves. Cover & let marinate, refrigerated, overnight.

Arrange chicken in a single layer in one or two shallow baking pans & spoon marinade over it evenly. Sprinkle chicken pieces with brown sugar & pour white wine around them.

Bake for 50-60 minutes, basting frequently with pan juices. Chicken is done when thigh pieces, pricked with a fork at their thickest, yield clear yellow (rather than pink) juice.

With a slotted spoon transfer chicken, prunes, olives & capers to serving platter. Moisten with a few spoonfuls of pan juices & sprinkle generously with parsley or cilantro. Pass remaining pan juices in a sauceboat.

Niagara’s 20 Valley wineries are coming to Ottawa!

We are at it again!  The Savvy Team is excited to announce…

Winemakers and winery owners from Niagara ‘s Twenty Valley wine region – located between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario – are coming to Ottawa to raise a glass to this year’s outstanding harvest and to pour their wines at their  first ever Taste & Buy event.

“This is the first time the wineries of Niagara’s Twenty Valley have gone ‘on tour’ as a group to showcase their finely crafted wines”, said Twenty Valley Tourism Association President and winery owner Sue-Ann Staff.

“We are delighted to pour our elegant whites, robust reds and other specialty wines to the receptive Ottawa wine lovers. We are excited to work with the Savvy Company knowing their outstanding history, commitment to quality and extreme competence of putting together a fabulous tasting in Ottawa. Ottawa has a particular appeal to the wineries of Niagara’s Twenty Valley.  We know the people in Ottawa love great wine.  And we happen to make some of the best wines in Ontario.  Bringing the two together can only provide for an evening of great success.”

Twenty Valley encompasses the rural towns of Beamsville, Vineland and Jordan. Their wines continue to be recognized and awarded around the world for outstanding quality and for the talent of their winemakers.  Wine enthusiasts in Ottawa have the opportunity to taste the Twenty Valley terroir when winemakers and winery owners come to the nation’s capital.

The Taste & Buy event hosted by Savvy Company is taking place on Friday October 19 at 7p.m. in the Panorama Room on the 2nd floor of the National Arts Centre.

$55.00 per person if purchased before October 10, 2012 and will be $60.00 after.

For Wine Lovers in Ontario, our own backyard is well stocked..

Cherry and peach trees, grapevines – miles of them, wineries galore dotted with the odd golf course, farmhouses, B and B’s are the memories of the past week in the Niagara Escarpment. When Holly suggested I write a guest blog on Doug’s and my recent travel, I immediately responded positively although it’s hard not to write a journal, so much to see and taste!

For wine lovers, the Niagara Escarpment, Twenty Valley, Niagara-On-the-Lake locales are an oenophile paradise. While the wineries offer the usual vitis vinifera varietals: Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir etc., many have ice-wine and their own rose.  Between sipping and sampling en route, as dedicated sommeliers and wine nuts, we visited over 20 wineries, as well as attending the Cool Climate Chardonnay event held at the Tawse Winery (July 23) where 56 wineries featured their “Chards.”  For the ABC folks (anything but Chardonnay), Chardonnay still remains the most widely produced VQA in Ontario.

Every winery we visited left something memorable; whether it was the enormous stainless steel tank named Budda, at Creekside Estate Winery, or the labels on the Organized Crime Wines, telling a pictoral story of Mennonites feuding over an organ (catch the play on the word?)  Or the new Colaneri winery, 37,000 square feet, the largest winery in the region still under construction, shaped like a Roman coliseum in a hugely impressive “C” representing the Italian family and their winemaking heritage.

The viticulture was amazing at Featherstone Winery where we witnessed sheep chomping away at the grape leaves so the grapes will be exposed to sunshine which in turn, speeds up their ripening. These little sheep meander up and down the rows of vines, and it was quite humorous watching them chew the leaves. Needless to say I took pictures.

Many of the wines at these boutique wineries are unavailable at the LCBO so we brought a few home. One purchase was a Featherstone rose and have since found it to be a great patio to table “spirit”.  An enchanting cranberry colour, all the ripe berry flavours, bone dry with tart acidity that practically jumps out of the glass. We have since enjoyed this with grilled shrimps, zucchini and our always tomato basil salad which makes a divine summer supper.

Sheep: appreciated for their usefulness & whimsy.

We have previously traveled the Twenty Valley and the sense of anticipation with old and new wineries never ceases to amaze and never disappoints. The people are friendly, knowledgeable and their eagerness to share the harvest makes for a magnetic welcome. We’re already talking about the wineries that we plan to visit next year. I’ve always said, you never have to look further than your own backyard in Ontario to find great wine.

As the song goes…they were California dreamin’. While honeymooning in Napa, California, Peter Jensen and his wife, Laura McCain Jensen, fell in love with the wine culture. So much so that shortly after their honeymoon, they launched into the wine industry by purchasing an existing winery in Nova Scotia – Blomidon Ridge Estate (they since sold this winery).  In 1998, they turned their focus to the Niagara region and founded Creekside Estate Winery. They bought multiple acres of vineyards and two farms that they transformed into a state-of-the-art winery with one of Canada’s largest underground barrel cellars designed in a classic old-world style.  Their California dream has certainly turned into a winery that is making an impression in the Canadian wine industry.

 

In this month’s Savvy Selections, you will find a wide-ranging assortment of fine wines:
– Reserve Sauvignon Blanc VQA 2006 – made in the Fume Blanc style (lightly oaked)
– Laura White VQA 2007 – a delicious medium bodied white blend showcasing the spectacular vintage of 2007

In addition, we couldn’t resist offering you two special features: Broken Press Shiraz and a small-batch Pinot Gris Select Late Harvest with a lovely balance of apple cider-like fruit flavors and refreshing acidity.

This past weekend at the prestigious Cuvee Awards & Gala – the Academy of Awards for the Ontario wine industry – Creekside was honoured with three awards including Gold for Best Shiraz/Syrah for the 2006 Broken Press Shiraz (one of the extra wines offered in this months Savvy Selections). There is a great story associated with the name and its unique blend that is not typical to Ontario. During the pressing of a batch of Viognier grapes, the small basket press broke.  Undaunted, Creekside’s winemaking team of Rob Powers and Craig McDonald creatively decided to create a northern Rhone-style wine by adding a small percentage of Viognier to the existing bins of Shiraz that were already awaiting fermentation. As I learned recently from another Australian winemaker, it is believed that a chemical reaction between the Viognier and Shiraz releases a range of subtle nuances in the wine. This spontaneous decision by Creekside’s winemakers produced a delicious, outstanding and award winning wine that rivals Rhone and Australian Shiraz made in the similar fashion.

Creekside Estate Winery

When I visited Creekside Estate Winery last summer, the retail and wine tasting facilities were under renovation.  The original facility was bursting at the seams with visitors, yet the new architectural plans on display promises to double the space while retaining its casual comfortable character.  In addition, a deck welcomes you to stop by on a summer weekend to enjoy lunch with a glass Creekside’s wines.  And, you might just get a sip of Undercurrent – a new product line to be launched this year. 

 

Rob Power and Craig McDonald were named chief winemakers in 2001, after working as assistant winemakers to Marcus Ansems, Creekside’s original winemaker. Says Matt Loney, Director of Marketing at Creekside, “Rob and Craig’s palates are in sync.  Together they bring a complementary background and experience to making wines at Creekside.”

 

The Dynamic Winemaking Duo
Craig McDonald was training to be an accountant when he took a summer job at a winery.  That summer job sparked an interest in winemaking and soon turned into a permanent position. From there, the Australian’s career has spanned nine different wineries around the globe, including the highly acclaimed Penfolds Winery in Australia.  Rob Power’s early experience in the wine industry was as a sommelier.  He became so fascinated in wine, that he enrolled in Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute and was a member of its first graduating class.

 

Craig and Rob’s combined winemaking talent has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades including the prestigious award for Winemakers of the Year in 2008. Laura McCain Jensen asserts, “I’ve said all along that Creekside is committed to making the best damn wines in Ontario. I’m so proud of my team.” 

 

With this enthusiasm and commitment from the owners and a clearly understood philosophy by everyone in the Creekside team, crafting premium quality wine is achievable.  They winemakers start with careful vineyard management with a proactive approach to maintain the health of the vines and the grapes.  For instance, when rain is forecasted – water effects the concentration of sugar in the fruit – they consider thinning the crop in advance of the storms.

 

While the Creekside team uses unique estate-grown grapes such as Malbec and Viognier, they also have a number of contracts with grape growers in different Niagara microclimates and terroirs. These contracts give them access to unique opportunities too. For instance, the Pinot Gris Select Late Harvest wine (one of the additional wines offered) resulted from an unusual batch of grapes that a grower left on the vine late into the harvest.  Rob and Craig took hold of this opportunity and crafted a unique and delicious sweet wine that has received rave reviews…cult status some would say! 

 

While Peter and Laura, as owners, set overall goals for the winery, they have provided the winemakers creative freedom, as well as the resources and opportunity to undertake small-batch experiments.  Rob explains, “Craig and I, along with our incredible staff, put a lot of passion into our work and with the support of the owners who make sure we have the tools and the grapes we need, the result is consistently great wine that we are all proud of.”

 

There are many examples of experimentation by this team.  When they incorporated the remaining Viognier grapes into the Shiraz, scribbled on the barrel was “Rotie”.  With the combination of grapes similar to that of the Côte Rotie wines of the northern Rhone, they used this label until the wine was formally named after the story on page one – Broken Press Shiraz.  Another example is while the original style of Sauvignon Blanc produced at the winery was a crisp New Zealand style with fresh citrus and green characteristics (think herbs and freshly mowed lawn), for the 2004 vintage they decided to try a Fumé Blanc style by barrel aging the wine in French oak to create more tropical notes, while retaining the crisp acidity characteristic of Creekside’s white wines.  So successful was this experiment, it won a gold medal at the Challenge International du Vin, France’s oldest wine competition. 

 

We are excited to share with you the 2006 vintage of this wine in the Savvy Selections.

Experimentation will manifest with a new product line – Undercurrent – to be launched this year.  This will be unique small-batch wines that will be available only at the winery – now there is reason enough to visit!

 

 

~Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes ~

Creekside Estate Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2006 VQA, $18.95

A unique award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, this dry wine was produced with grapes sourced from several vineyards in the Niagara Peninsula.  A portion of the juice was fermented in French oak, while the balance was fermented in stainless.  The wines were then aged in barrel for 9 months.

 

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes:  A remarkable, aromatic wine with an intense nose with hints of sweet herbs, toasted coconut, a touch of smoke and citrus.  Medium-bodied, it has a refreshing acidity, bright citrus flavors and a pleasant slight bitterness on the long finish.

 

Suggested Food Pairing: Serve this wine chilled, with a goat cheese appetizer, seafood, or grilled white fish.

 

Cellaring:  No need to wait…this wine is ready to drink now. It can cellar for up to 2 years.

 

Creekside Estate Laura Red 2006 VQA, $19.95

Another signature wine from this winery, Laura’s Red assemblage (winespeak: blend) includes the typical Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec.  The wine was aged for a period of 18 months in a combination of American and French oak.

 

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: Deep red, this wine displays aromas of smoke, plum, herbs and a whiff of cooca. Full-bodied, the bright red fruit was matched by tart acidity and firm tannins.  The long finish had notes of char, smoke and herbs.  TIP: Have a sip, then, leave it for awhile to notice how the aromas evolve & change!

 

Suggested Food Pairing: A food wine, it would be ideally paired with boeuf bourgignon, grilled bison or venison, or try Susan’s simple recipe for Italian meatballs in tomato sauce below

 

Cellaring: This may be enjoyed now, decanted, but the firm tannins will mellow as it cellars for 3-5 years.


Creekside Estate Laura White 2007 VQA, $17.95
2007 blessed winemakers with a growing season that was heralded by many as a ‘vintner’s dream’. This white wine is an unusual blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Riesling. Each of the varietals were vinified separately – some were fermented or aged in old French oak barrels, others in stainless steel.  After 9 months of aging, the wines were assembled into this unique blend.  

 

Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes:  “This wine reminds me of some southern Rhone white blends that I tasted a few years ago – beautiful body and fabulous flavors”, commented Susan during the tasting panel.  The wine has intense complex aromas of sweet citrus, flowers and exotic fruits. Generous and full-bodied, the luscious fruit flavors are well-balanced with fresh and lingering acidity. 

 

Suggested Food Pairing: The Sommeliers involved in the tasting panel felt that this wine would pair best with a good book!  Enjoy on its own, or with roast chicken, pork, seafood or slightly spicy dishes would work very well.

 

Cellaring: You’ll want to drink it all now.  Of course, if you have more than one bottle, you could hold it to see how the flavors evolve!

 


~ Recipes to enjoy with your Savvy Selections ~

With Creekside Estate Reserve Sauvignon Blanc VQA…

Halibut with Lemon-Caper Sauce
Recipe from The Ottawa Citizen
Serves 4-6

 

Ingredients

1 ½ lbs halibut fillets, cut into 8 pieces (skin removed)
sea salt & freshyly ground pepper
½ C all-purpose flour
4-6 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp chopped shallots
¼ C small capers, rinsed & drained
3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp freshly grated lemon zest
4 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 Tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

 

Method

Season halibut well on both sides with salt & pepper.  Place flour in a pie plate.  Place 2 Tbsp oil in a 12” non-stick skillet of medium-high heat.

 

Dip 4 pieces of fish in flour & place in hot skillet.  Cook, turning once, until fish is opaque & edges are golden brown, 2-3 minutes.  Transfer to a warm platter (or place in warm oven).  Add more oil to skillet, if necessary, and repeat with remaining fish.

 

After fish is cooked, add remaining 2 Tbsp oil, shallots & capers to skillet.  Saute 1 minute, until shallots are golden.  Add lemon juice & zest, and bring to a boil.  Simmer 1 minute; add ¼ tsp salt & a pinch of pepper.  Remove from heat, swirl in butter & parsley.  Spoon over fish, serve & enjoy!   

 

 

With Creekside Estate Laura White VQA…

Crispy Pork Medallions
Recipe adapted from Oils & Vinegars, by Jean-Francois Plante
Serves 4-6

 

Ingredients

2 pork tenderloins, sliced diagonally approx 2” thick
¼ extra-virgin olive oil
1 large shallot, finely chopped
1 tsp herbes de provence
1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
Breadcrumbs

 

Method

Assemble the olive oil, shallot, herbs and mustard in a glass dish.  Mix well together.  Add the sliced pork and stir to cover with the marinade.  Refrigerate & marinate for 2-4 hours.

 

Heat oven to 400F.   

 

Place breadcrumbs in a bowl.  Stir each piece of marinated pork in the bowl to cover lightly with breadcrumbs.

 

Place the breaded pork medallions on a non-stick baking sheet.

 

Bake for approx 15 minutes, or until the medallions are just pink in the centre.  Remove from oven and serve with herbed roast sweet potatoes and green beans.

 

With Creekside Estate Laura Red VQA…
Polpettine Rifatte
Recipe adapted from My Tuscany Lorenza de’ Medici
Serves 6

Ingredients

1 ¼ – 1 ½ lbs lean ground beef
2 handfuls fresh, coarse country bread crumbs, soaked in milk for about 5 mins & squeezed dry
½ lb fresh sausage meat – approx 2 sausages, try mild Italian
1 finely chopped shallot
1 Tbsp chopped flat-leaved parsley
2 eggs
1 C dry breadcrumbs
3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 28 oz can Italian tomatoes, pureed
Fresh basil leaves to taste, chopped
1 large mild onion, thinly sliced

Method

In a bowl, mix beef with the soft breadcrumbs, sausage meat, shallot, parsley and egg until well blended.  Add salt & pepper to taste.  Form meatballs the size of extra-large eggs.  Coat well in dry breadcrumbs and place on a baking sheet.

 

Heat oven to 400F.  Cook meatballs for approximately 25 minutes.

 

Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and fry until barely golden.  Add the tomato puree and cook for a few minutes.  Add the chopped basil and salt or pepper to taste.  Add the meatballs.  Cover and cook for about 10 minutes on low heat, turning them delicately a couple of time.  If the tomato sauce becomes too thick, add a little water.

 

Arrange the meatballs on a platter and serve.  They may be accompanied by fresh Ciabatta bread and stir-fired or roasted vegetables (zucchini, onion, carrots, mushrooms).
