Derek shares the story behind the wine’s name:
“I made Impromptu when I was winemaker at Lailey Vineyards. Named as it was a very impromptu moment when we went to press the fermented grapes! The first year it was made was in 2006 with Lailey’s property-grown Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It turned out that we had very little Petit Verdot and Malbec – not enough to bottle single varietal wines, so we blended the three ferments in the basket press and that was the beginning of it all.”
