 At Karlo Estates, they made this wine using a method that allows the yeast to convert sugar to alcohol until it got down to the desired sweetness level. At this point, the wine was fortified with alcohol to create a very special fortified wine. It was then barrel-aged in French oak barrels for 24 months.

Karlo Estates has created a port-style wine with property-grown Frontenac Noir grapes. Considered as the first fortified wine made in Prince Edward County, Van Alstine Red is a ruby port-like wine with aromas of black raspberry, red licorice, red cherry, dark chocolate and a hint of wood (think cedar). Pour yourself a glass to enjoy it’s round, soft texture with ripe fruit and a lingering finish.
Ideal as an after dinner or dessert wine, pair it with anything with dark chocolate. Chunks of dark chocolate, salted nuts or decadent dark chocolate cake, flourless molten lava cake with raspberries and of course a classic pairing is blue cheese!Â
