This red wine is another example of Between the Lines’ passion for sustainability and innovation.
A varietal once found only in Austria and Germany, Lemberger (also called Blaufränkisch) has found a natural home in the cool-climate vineyards of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Brothers Yannick and Greg Wertsch — founders of Between the Lines — first planted this rare grape years ago, recognizing its potential to thrive in Ontario’s limestone-rich soils and temperate climate.
The 2023 vintage showcases that foresight beautifully. Crafted without oak to preserve its natural freshness, this wine bursts with dark fruit, floral, and peppery aromas. The palate is elegant and balanced, featuring black cherry, blackberry, and cracked black pepper wrapped in a smooth, juicy finish. Its vibrant acidity and soft tannins make it both approachable and complex, a hallmark of Between the Lines’ winemaking style.
Between the Lines has a simple philosophy: let the fruit speak for itself. Flavour and drinking experience is at the core of everything they do resulting in wines that are expressive and balanced. The brothers’ focus on small-lot production and minimal intervention means every vintage showcases the purity of Niagara’s terroir.
