2017 Marquette
$20
Prince Edward County
Marquette is one of the most popular hybrid grape varieties developed by the University of Minnesota’s cold-climate research centre. It produces lovely, full-bodied red wines that thrive in our chilly climes, making it a common sight in the Ottawa Valley, Nova Scotia, and elsewhere. This Marquette was grown in the former 33 Vines vineyard, and is 100% Prince Edward County fruit.
Estate grown, aged for 10 months in mostly French oak, there’s a load of fruit here: blackberries, figs, and plum, with mint, tobacco and the light gameyness that Marquette is known for.
Savvy Sommelier Tasting Notes: Typical of Marquettes, this has lots of dark cherries, dried fruit, tobacco, and coffee on the nose and palate. It’s rich, with high tannins and acid both. It’s a very satisfying, full-bodied wine that will please a crowd!
The tannins are light and the acidity tart. It has a satisfying sour cherry finish.
Suggested Food Pairing: The wine-maker recommends serving this with any traditional Italian fare, such as pasta with tomato sauce.
Cellaring: Ready to drink now, this can be laid down for up to 3 years.
