Coffee Brewing Methods: How to make REALLY Good Coffee

coffee brewing methods

At Savvy, we explore the realms of Canadian micro-roasters through our Savvy Choice Coffee club. As we sipped our way through delightful brews, the age-old question lingered: “What are the best coffee brewing methods to make a truly good cup of coffee?” The answer, it seems, is as diverse as our taste preferences.

In our pursuit of coffee wisdom, we caught up with Paul Latreille, the passionate co-owner of Chin Chin Coffee, a new entrant in the roasting scene. With only six months under their belt, they’ve already made waves. Paul generously shared insights into brewing methods that align with different bean roasts. Here’s your guide to elevating your coffee game.

Drip/Pour-Over Filter Coffee: Ideal for Light & Medium Roasts

For those savoring the nuances of light and medium-roasted beans, the Drip/Pour-Over method is a classic choice. Whether you opt for the Melita pour-over or the sleek Chemex, the key is the coffee-to-water ratio – 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. This method lets the delicate flavors shine through, offering a refined coffee experience.

French Press: Boldness in Every Sip

Dark roast enthusiasts, this one’s for you. The French Press, with its robust brewing, extracts the full-bodied goodness of dark roasted beans. Use a ratio of 1g to 10g of hot water for that extra kick. Witness the coffee ‘bloom’ for 30-45 seconds, stir gently, wait for 3 minutes before pressing down the plunger. But beware, let the remaining coffee linger in the press, and your second cup might pack a bitter punch.

Moka Pot: A Gem for Medium to Dark Roasts

The Moka Pot, a hidden gem, crafts a delightful cup, especially for medium to dark roasts. Grind your coffee finely, akin to espresso, with a dose of 20 to 25 grams for 300 to 350ml of hot water. As the pressure builds, the Moka Pot delivers a rich, intense brew. Take it off the heat, savour the aromas, and enjoy.

AeroPress: When Excellence Meets Speed

For the time-pressed coffee aficionados, the AeroPress emerges as a champion. Hailed as a superior brewing method, it accommodates all roasts. With a dose of 17 grams of finely ground coffee and 200ml of hot water, it’s akin to a pour-over, delivering a quick and excellent cup every time.

As your coffee journey unfolds, experiment with these coffee brewing methods to discover the one that aligns with your roast preference. Whether you’re drawn to the delicate nuances of light roasts or crave the boldness of a dark brew, there’s a perfect brewing method waiting to elevate your coffee ritual. Cheers to brewing excellence!
