Corks & Forks returns with a Spanish flare

KINGSTON, ON   January 31, 2020 – Wine lovers throughout Ontario are celebrating now that the date is set for Corks & Forks – Kingston’s 2nd Annual International Wine Festival. This weekend long wine festival will be held April 24th to 26th and will be a wine experience like no other in Ontario. Not only will the festival showcase Kingston’s hospitality and restaurant scene, the 2020 edition will also shine the spotlight wines of Spain.

“Spain is one of the world’s oldest wine regions and the popularity of its wines is rapidly growing in Canada”, Debbie Trenholm, President of Savvy Company and Founder of the festival. “Spain makes diverse styles of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry. Corks & Forks is the opportunity for consumers to try them with winemakers, agents and industry experts as their guides.”

Corks & Forks kicks off with the sound of corks popping off bottles of Cava (Spain’s signature sparkling wine) on Friday April 24th with Ole! Savour Spain – Spanish Wine 101 – a fun educational evening that treats Festival passholders to samples of Spanish wines & tapas foods.  During the daytime on Saturday and Sunday, themed seminars and panel tastings will be led by Canada’s top Sommeliers and wine experts. These educational experiences quickly sold out last year, so festival organizers have doubled the number in the schedule making even more opportunities for everyone – novices to Sommeliers – to learn about the world of wine.

The evening of Saturday April 25th will see the return of last year’s popular Discover the Wine World Tasting Hall featuring a variety of Spanish, International as well as Canadian wines.

The ever popular Lunch with the Experts and Winemaker’s Dinners will take place on Saturday and Sunday.  Ticket availability for these events will be announced on the website and social media in the upcoming weeks.

NEW FOOD & WINE EVENT: Best Bites of Kingston is a new event that will give ticketholders a taste of the culinary talent from the city’s top restaurants paired with a wine from the festival.  Ticketholders will vote on the People’s Choice wine & food pairing.

“The response from the inaugural Corks & Forks last year was incredible,” says Megan Knott, Executive Director of Tourism Kingston. “Kingston is a natural fit to host the wine world with our growing culinary scene plus its proximity to Canada’s fastest growing wine region – Prince Edward County.”

Delta Hotels by Marriott Kingston Waterfront and the Residence Inn by Marriott Water’s Edge will be the hub hotels during the festival.  Special winemaker’s dinner events will take place at various restaurants throughout the city.

“With the expanded festival programming now running over 3 days, Kingston hotels have created attractive weekend packages for visitors to enjoy the festival and discover the city,” Krista LeClair, Executive Director of Kingston Accommodation Partners.

Corks & Forks is once again this year offering the hospitality sector an Industry Day with classes and seminars designed specifically for restaurant and hotel staff, food and wine media as well as people wanting to get into the food and wine business.  The day is devoted to professional development and education from certified experts and Master Sommeliers focused on improving wine service, trending wine regions, creating profitable wine list, importance of glassware and tastings of Prince Edward County, Niagara and Spain.

“There’s always delicious wines coming from Spain that are great value”, says Harry Hertscheg, Executive Director of the Vancouver International Wine Festival and certified Spanish Wine Educator.  Hertscheg was part of the inaugural Corks & Forks last year and is returning as a seminar leader this year. “Corks & Forks is a terrific opportunity for me to share my passion for Spanish wines along with the fascinating discoveries I’ve made while traveling through their many wine regions.”

Corks & Forks Festival Pass is $99 for two people and includes admission to both Friday and Saturday evening events.  New this year is the Festival Pass PLUS is $149 which includes all that the Festival Pass provides plus enrolment for a total of two seminars. Tickets to seminars are $40 and prices for other events will be announced when launched.

Passes and tickets are now on sale at www.corksandforks.ca

What a brewery tour!

For over 6 years, our Savvy Brew Crew has roamed the backroads to discover craft beers you can’t always find on the shelves at The Beer Store, LCBO or grocery stores.  Savvy Hip Hops has been our way of sharing those discoveries with craft beer enthusiasts.

We have organized thousands of deliveries of all kinds of beers to our subscribers across Ontario.  As of June 2019, we have decided to sunset Savvy Hip Hops subscriptions.

It was a great adventure discovering breweries in every corner of the province and delivering them to our subscribers doorstep.  Here is a list of some of the breweries we have featured over the years.

We raise a glass to all of our Savvy Hip Hops subscribers who have joined us on this beer soaked journey & encourage them to continue to support Ontario craft breweries as they are making mighty fine beers.  To all of the brewery owners & brewmasters we’ve worked with – keep up the great work!

Cheers,

Debbie

With its newest expansion into Toronto and the Ontario market, British Columbia-based FreshTAP Pouring Systems promises wine lovers across the province a carefully curated range of Smarter, Fresher, Friendlier local VQA wines on tap, by the glass to an ever more discerning community of restaurateurs and wine lovers.

From its 5,000 square foot facility in the Niagara Peninsula, FreshTAP Ontario kegs wines from Creekside Estate Winery, Henry of Pelham Estate Winery, Mike Weir Winery, Stoney Ridge, Reif Estate Winery, and Vineland Estates into 19.5L stainless steel kegs—the equivalent of 26 bottles or 130 five-ounce glasses.

Held under the gentle pressure of an inert gas, each wine is perfectly preserved from oxidation for up to eight months once tapped, ensuring that the last glass is as fresh as the first. FreshTAP is currently featured in Toronto at popular restaurants such as Rock Lobster, Drake 150, Montage and Walhburgers, and ONE Restaurant by Mark McEwan. FreshTAP has also installed seven, five-tap systems and a portable wine-on-tap unit at the new 5,300 seat Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.

Latest trend in wine

“Wine-on-tap is the hottest trend in restaurant wine service across North America right now,” says FreshTAP Ontario’s  Cameron West, who, alongside Vineland Estates Winery’s Allan and Brian Schmidt, has brought FreshTAP to Ontario. The sons of a third-generation winemaking family whose father founded B.C.’s Sumac Ridge Winery, the Schmidts have been pioneers and industry leaders in the Niagara wine region for over three decades.

“We knew of the high-quality standards developed and practiced by FreshTAP in B.C. for premium wine kegging and restaurant wine-on-tap installations,” says Allan Schmidt. “That made it easy for us to partner with them to expand the brand and to make that same premium service available to all of Ontario’s wineries.”

From the point-of-sale perspective, FreshTAP ensures the utmost quality in wine-on-tap by-the-glass, with less spoilage and waste, greater efficiency for restaurants, and a more positive environmental impact.

Waste not…want not

Based on current clients and licensees, FreshTAP Ontario estimates it will keg over 100,000 liters of wine in its first year (2014-2015), thereby eliminating more than 15,000 lbs of cardboard waste and diverting some 130,000 bottles, caps and corks from Ontario’s recycling and waste streams. Since launching in British Columbia in 2011, FreshTAP has kegged over 320,000 liters of wine, eliminated 52,201lbs of cardboard waste and kept 429,052 bottles, caps and corks from entering that province.

“It’s been an exciting three years since we launched in B.C., and we couldn’t be happier partnering with such esteemed industry professionals in Ontario to elevate FreshTAP to the national level,” said FreshTAP Co-Founder Mike Macquisten. FreshTAP at hockey game“There is an incredible consumer demand and the momentum keeps building for wine-on-tap. We’re thrilled to be at the vanguard of this category in the Canadian market.”

In addition to its Ontario vendors, FreshTAP is also available at over 150 restaurants and public venues across Western Canada such as Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, Delta Hotels, and 14 of The Keg Steakhouse locations throughout British Columbia and Alberta.
